Diabetes education program merits recognition

(August 20, 2001) Moses Cone Nutrition and Diabetes Management Center has received the prestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program.

The certificate was awarded because of the center’s high-quality education program, an essential part of effectively treating diabetes.

Programs applying for recognition voluntarily submit to a rigorous review by experts in the field of diabetes. Each program is evaluated on its ability to provide patients with a comprehensive individualized education program.

Programs earning recognition have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals, who can provide patients with complete information about diabetes management.

"The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide,” says Lyn Richardson, Director, Moses Cone Nutrition and Diabetes Management Center. "And, of course, it assures the patient that he or she will likely receive high-quality service.” Recognition status is awarded for three years.

According to the American Diabetes Association, 15.7 million Americans have diabetes. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve damage and amputation.

The American Diabetes Association is the nation’s leading nonprofit health organization supporting diabetes research and information for health professionals, patients and the public. For more information, visit www.diabetes.org.
