(June 24, 2003) People at risk for heart disease and stroke in Guilford County may get free screenings at their workplace or community event thanks to a mobile screening truck.
The HealthWise program is a collaboration between Moses Cone Health System Heart and Vascular Center and Moses Cone Health System Stroke Center.
Health professionals will take the truck to various locations and screen people for the six risk factors associated with heart disease and stroke: high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity and smoking. Blood testing for cholesterol and glucose levels will be performed on site with results available within minutes. Individuals will receive a risk score and suggestions on how to reduce their chances of heart disease and stroke.
The HealthWise screening program is paid for through a grant from the Moses Cone-Wesley Long Community Health Foundation. The goal is to provide screenings to those who might not otherwise get regular checkups from a doctor.
To be eligible for a free screening, businesses or organizations must have at least 70 percent of the people screened meet one of the following criteria: minority or speak English as a second language, have an annual household income of less than $35,000 or live in Guilford County outside of Greensboro and High Point city limits. Businesses or organizations interested in hosting a HeartWISE visit should call 832-9999.
Heart disease and stroke combined account for one-third of all deaths in Guilford County.
'Knowing your risks gives you the power to make choices about lifestyle changes that can have a profound impact on your health,' Karen Pierce, Director, Cardiovascular Support Services, Moses Cone Health System, says. 'By helping people learn about their risks earlier, we hope to give them the tools to fight heart disease and stroke before it touches them.'
