New Graduates

Moses Cone Health System understands the unique challenges you will face as a new graduate nurse. We also know that it is important for you to have a successful first year.

The Graduate Advancement Program (GAP) was designed with this in mind and facilitates your transition into your first professional work experience. New graduates will be hired for a specific department and will remain in that department for one year. During GAP, you will have a departmental preceptor and supportive work environment. A combination of structured clinical and classroom experiences will promote your ability to function fully and comfortably in your new role. GAP is designed to complement your departmental orientation. Your GAP date is scheduled in conjunction with your hospital orientation and will be assigned upon licensure.

We have prepared a new graduate employment checklist to guide you through the process of seeking employment. Please take note of the steps that are required to obtain authorization to test.

Program goals

You will gain experiences to build confidence and begin developing your clinical competencies.

You will have the opportunity to build professional relationships with peer groups and leaders as you transition into a professional nursing career.

Program features

As part of this program, you will enjoy a yearlong mentorship with an experienced leader. This leader will provide you with a variety of tools in a supportive environment that will help you develop problem-solving skills. Dedicated time will be allocated for you to meet in small groups with your mentor-leader and colleagues.

You will attend one class a week for four weeks of structured classroom and clinical activities.

You will also have  monthly "Focus Day" activities that develop professionalism and promote integration into your new role.

Department orientation

Orientation time is based on individual needs. Generally, orientation for Specialty areas and step down departments will last 12–16 weeks, where Medical-Surgical orientations last 8–12 weeks. Each department uses an orientation pathway that builds content specific to their area.

Skilled preceptors will provide guidance as you master new skills, competencies and develop critical thinking skills.

Educational opportunities are available through classroom programs, department-based inservices, clinical skills fairs and computer based learning.
