This position is accountable to collect blood samples in order to provide assistance in physician diagnosis to provide quality care. This position serves the following age categories: neonatal, pediatrics, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
MAJOR WORK ACTIVITIES:
1. Collect blood samples from all patient types in order to provide assistance in physician diagnosis. 2. Act as a resource for difficult patients and situations in order to enhance departmental performance. 3. Label samples to ensure accurate patient identification according to policies and procedures. 4. Utilize computer system in order to accurately document laboratory activity. 5. Participate in other section activities such as inventory/control, procedure manuals, scheduling and Quality Assurance monitors in order to enhance departmental performance. 6. Provides excellent customer service to all clients to provide timely, effective laboratory services, including clerical duties. 7. Monitor supplies in order to maintain adequate levels of inventory to ensure continuous operations. 8. Act as trainer for other phlebotomists and students in order to enhance departmental performance. 9. Act as senior person in absence of coordinator. 10. Perform point of care testing and troubleshooting. 11. Demonstrates personal commitment to quality and personal accountability standards. 12. Performs advanced maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment. 13. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 2. Knowledge of medical terminology. 3. Must have full use of upper and lower extremities. 4. Ability to pass a color blind test. 5. Ability to walk, stand, climb stairs, bend and lift 20 lb. Basket for the entire shift.
6. Must have manual dexterity and good eye/hand coordination. 7. Ability to evaluate and appropriately respond to verbal and non-verbal communication from patients in diverse stages of development, i.e., neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. 8. Clinical knowledge and skills related to neonates, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics is required and will be assessed during the performance appraisal process. 9. Ability to complete a typing test with 90% accuracy required.
