An almost hotel-like experience greets people with cardiovascular disease in the newly opened first phase of the Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center. The $25-million addition is located at the front of The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
The 61,150-square-foot addition puts most heart and vascular services in one place, making it easier for patients and families. 'This is a significant milestone in the enhancement of these important services. Our Heart and Vascular Center is a regional center of excellence in every sense,' says Winburne King, Chairman, Moses Cone Health System Board of Trustees.
The fact that the new wing is attached to the hospital adds a measure of safety for those rare instances when routine procedures aren't. 'Because we have located the heart center within a hospital, I like to say we have the best of both worlds,' says Dr. Charles Wilson, Heart and Vascular Center Medical Director.
The Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center features nine procedure rooms where people can undergo a variety of tests to diagnose cardiovascular disease. A new catheterization lab - a joint venture between local physicians and Moses Cone Health System - has flat-panel technology that allows doctors better views. The entire second floor of the Heart and Vascular wing houses an intensive care and recovery department with 28 private patient rooms. The department offers life-supporting technologies and monitoring for people with severe cardiac disease requiring complicated medical care.
The new parking garage, spacious waiting areas and consultation rooms ensure comfort and convenience for patients, family and friends. A community resource room offers video and computer access to educational materials.
'This center recognizes the important role we play in dealing with cardiovascular disease in our community,' says Tim Rice, President and CEO, Moses Cone Health System. 'Through this center we offer the region the latest in cardiovascular technology and expertise in a patient-friendly environment.'
Work on the Heart and Vascular Center isn't complete. Work will soon begin on renovating 28,500 square feet of space inside the hospital, adjacent to the new center. That renovation, which is expected to take 18 months, will provide expanded recovery areas and other space.
