TIM RICE

R. Timothy Rice was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Moses Cone Health System in August 2004. He served as Chief Operating Officer from 2001 to 2004.

Prior to 2001, Rice served as Executive Vice President of The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and as Executive Vice President of the Health Services Division.

He has a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Washington State University and a master's degree in health administration from Duke University. He is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives. Rice is chairman-elect of the North Carolina Hospital Association Board of Trustees for 2009.

Rice is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and chair-elect of the board of directors of the North Carolina Hospital Association. Rice is active in the community, serving as a board chair for the Greensboro Partnership, the Central Atlantic VHA Board and the United Way of Greensboro Campaign.

TERRY AKIN 

Terrence "Terry" Akin joined Moses Cone Health System as Chief Operating Officer in July 2009. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Moses Cone Health System.

Akin previously worked as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital in Texas. Harris Methodist Fort Worth is part of the 13-hospital Texas Health Resources system.

Akin is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He earned an MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He also earned a master's degree in social work from the university. Akin received his bachelor of science degree in psychology from Texas A&M University.

TIM CLONTZ

Tim Clontz serves as the Executive Vice President of Health Services Division. A Charlotte native, Clontz came to Moses Cone Health System through the 1997 merger with Wesley Long Community Hospital, where he served as executive vice president. Clontz joined Wesley Long Community Hospital in 1983 as assistant hospital director.

He holds a master's degree in health administration from Duke University and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

 

 

SUSAN SHUMAKER

Susan Shumaker, Executive Vice President for Moses Cone Health System and President of Annie Penn Hospital, comes to the System through the merger with Annie Penn Hospital. She served as president and chief executive officer of Annie Penn Hospital beginning in January 1990.

She came to the Reidsville hospital in June 1984 as Vice President of Clinical Services/Assistant Administrator.

Shumaker graduated with a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Duke University, where she also earned a master's degree in health administration.

She was named the 2006 NC Grass Roots Champion by the American Hospital Association. She is a former member of the Governing Council of the American Hospital Association Section for Small/Rural Hospitals.

TOM GETTINGER

Tom Gettinger is Executive Vice President/Administrator of the Moses Cone Health System flagship hospital - The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Gettinger joined Moses Cone Health System in 1992 as Vice President of Patient Care Management. He was in this position until 1997 when he assumed the role of Vice President of the Heart and Vascular Center.

In 2002, he became Vice President/Administrator of The Women's Hospital of Greensboro, where he has been responsible for the operations and financial management of the 134-bed facility.

During Gettinger's tenure at The Women's Hospital, the facility was recognized for excellence in patient satisfaction and underwent a $17 million expansion and renovation project.

Gettinger received a master's degree in health administration from Duke University, Fuqua School of Business. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Wake Forest University.

BOB GOLDSTEIN
Bob Goldstein became the first Executive Vice President, Physician Network, for Moses Cone Health System in December 2008. As such, Goldstein manages physician practices owned by Moses Cone Health System, such as LeBauer Healthcare, Triad Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, and Vascular and Vein Specialists of Greensboro.

Goldstein joined Moses Cone Health System in March 2002 as Vice President/Executive Director of LeBauer HealthCare.

Goldstein is a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives. He received his master's of health administration degree from Duke University and his bachelor of science degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook, NY.

JOAN WESSMAN
Chief Nursing Officer Joan Wessman, RN, joined Moses Cone Health System in January 2003. As Chief Nursing Officer, she sets the tone for nursing practice within the Health System.

One of her first tasks was to gain Magnet recognition for the hospitals of Moses Cone Health System. That effort paid off in 2005 when all five Moses Cone Health System hospitals were awarded the Magnet designation.

Wessman was named Visionary Leader in 2006 by the Nursing Management Journal. She was named a Great 100 nurse in North Carolina that same year.

Wessman earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Miami University in Ohio and her master's of science degree in nursing from The Ohio State University.

NOEL BURT
Noel Burt joined Moses Cone Health System in 2003 as Vice President of Human Resources. In his role as Chief Human Resources Officer, Burt supervises the hiring, promotion, retention and benefits for Moses Cone Health System employees.

Burt was named a 2008 Impact HR/Staffing Leader by Business Leader Magazine. He is a member of the MBA Board of Advisors for the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Burt earned Ph.D. and master's degrees in organizational psychology from Georgia State University and a master's degree in divinity from Emory University.

BETH WARD
Beth Ward, who joined Moses Cone Health System in 1996 as Corporate Controller, is Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer.

Ward has served on the board of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. She currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Bryan School of Business at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Spectrum Laboratory Board and as a board member of NewBridge Bank.

Ward is a member of the Health Financial Managers Association, the North Carolina Association of CPAs, the Health Management Academy and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Ward earned a master's of business administration degree from UNCG and a bachelor's degree in business finance and insurance from Radford University.                                                             

 

Health Resources
