It is the mission and goal of Pastoral Care Services to participate in the Health System's effort to care for the whole person, recognizing the interrelatedness of body, mind and spirit in either sickness or health. The objective of the chaplain's ministry is to assist the patient in mobilizing the resources of his person and spirituality to progress toward health and wholeness. This mission is also to function as an integral part of the healthcare team and the healthcare system, and by maintaining effective networking with the religious community.
The mission is accomplished by:
- Assuring the provision of quality pastoral care to meet the emotional and spiritual needs of patients, families and staff utilizing the resources of the staff chaplains, adjunct chaplains and the community clergy as appropriate.
- Promoting and coordinating a positive relationship of communication and networking between the Health System and the religious community to assure an optimal level of support for the relationship between minister and/or the congregation and the hospitalized member and/or their family.
- Promoting awareness and sensitivity among healthcare staff for the religious and spiritual needs and practices of patients and families.
- Providing consultation and counseling to staff members within the limits of time availability and competence of the staff chaplains.
The department is comprised of three primary service areas, including:
- General Pastoral Care and Counseling services to patients in the four acute care hospitals and the Behavioral Health Center.
- A Clinical Pastoral Education program which provides certified training for clergy and qualified laity.
- A Congregational Nurse Program supports nurses in selected congregational settings with a focus on health education, wellness and consultation.
The department is comprised of staff chaplains, three at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, one at Wesley Long Community Hospital, one at The Women's Hospital of Greensboro and one at Annie Penn Hospital. In additional, the chaplaincy staff is supported by the presence of Clinical Pastoral Education students and Adjunct Chaplains (volunteers).
